Take 10 Deep Breaths ...  And do nothing.  Happy Valentine's Day!

Possibilities

I prefer movies.

I prefer cats.

I prefer the oaks along the Warta.

I prefer Dickens to Dostoyevsky.

I prefer myself liking people

to myself loving mankind.

I prefer keeping a needle and thread on hand, just in case.

I prefer the color green.

I prefer not to maintain

that reason is to blame for everything.

I prefer exceptions.

I prefer to leave early.

I prefer talking to doctors about something else.

I prefer the old fine-lined illustrations.

I prefer the absurdity of writing poems

to the absurdity of not writing poems.

I prefer, where love's concerned, nonspecific anniversaries

that can be celebrated every day.

I prefer moralists

who promise me nothing.

I prefer cunning kindness to the over-trustful kind.

I prefer the earth in civvies.

I prefer conquered to conquering countries.

I prefer having some reservations.

I prefer the hell of chaos to the hell of order.

I prefer Grimms' fairy tales to the newspapers' front pages.

I prefer leaves without flowers to flowers without leaves.

I prefer dogs with uncropped tails.

I prefer light eyes, since mine are dark.

I prefer desk drawers.

I prefer many things that I haven't mentioned here

to many things I've also left unsaid.

I prefer zeroes on the loose

to those lined up behind a cipher.

I prefer the time of insects to the time of stars.

I prefer to knock on wood.

I prefer not to ask how much longer and when.

I prefer keeping in mind even the possibility

that existence has its own reason for being.

By Wislawa Szymborska

From "Nothing Twice", 1997

Translated by S. Baranczak & C. Cavanagh

Wislawa Szymborska won the Nobel Peace Prize in Literature in 1996.

She is one of my favorite people, perhaps my favorite poet.  She passed away

two weeks ago at the age of 88.  After all those years, she was still

writing beautifully.  She will be misssed.

Configurators Are Us

The Style Coop + Technofisch are takin' it to the SF Bay!!  Rachel Brooks got our Modul.us project accepted into the NewMe Accelerator... a happenin' venture sponsored by Google and a crackin' path to bringing our configurator to life.  Rachel is the founder of the Style Cooperative and has a super slick product line of men's accessories out and about.  We met last year at the reVamped fashion show in Bridgeport, have been kickin around a concept for creating your own style online.  Design your product, then your manufacturer ships it.  It's fun.  People are loving it.  Bespoke fashion is trending.  Last fall I found Burberry Bespoke, designed furry winter parkas.  Now they've got their trench wear in the software.  We're next.

How to mix art and business?

Business can be tough.   Money is an interesting motivator.  Creative services make for an inspired opportunity to encourage meeting of many minds and hearts.  Throw in marketing initiatives and business logic, the creative process can call on scrappy determination.  Finding the sweet spot among factors of artistry, authenticity and information to compel a community is no job for the faint of heart.

The Louvre Launched on Drupal

My day just took a detour after reading Dries' blog post about the Louvre launching their new Drupal site!  Somehow I feel more closely connected to the fanciest art mecca around, like the Lady Louvre just married my king cousin or something.  I even created my 'personal' space at the Louvre and expect to be spending beaucoup du temp bookmarking my favorite artworks and Parisian art haps.  After fleshing out my new Louvre user profile, I noticed my picture popping up mid-home page, adorned with a 'Donate Online' button to boot.  Very thoughtful information architects at that helm, no doubt.

Now I feel even more justified in loving Drupal.  We have come around to being quite pleased with D7.  It's been a year of continuous Drupal work, and there's more to come for sure.  Cheers to that!  And cheers to the Art Institute Chicago ... they shipped with Drupal quite some time ago.

I realize it's only Thanksgiving, but I can't quit thinking of Easter eggs!   Not so much the chocolate hunt in my grandma's back yard, but rather the delightful secret code snippets dropped here and there by playful developers.  Lately I'm fascinated with life fully motivated toward delight.   One of my favorite little design duos stake their claim on delight – Meomi:  A Little Design Studio Dedicated to Play, Delight and Goodliness.  Awww.  Check it out.

Seriously now, let's play.   Let's hone our skills and push each other to explore, to compete, to make goals.  To win, to lose, to have fun playing the game.

With increasing frequency, I'm learning to leverage the states of play.  It's a nice balm while pushing myself, an excellent forum for engaging and persuading my mates, whether family, friends, colleagues, clients or OTHER.  Watch yourself.

The Haps

It was a very merry nose-to-the-grindstone end of year.  And finally we reap the rewards, Kohl Children's Museum just launched as well as a microsite for their new Science + You exhibit sponsored by Abbott Labs.  Another big up to Digital Bridge and Marissa Strassel.
